I have been 2 times at Nougatine, the daughter restaurant which is easier to access without reservation, which is great, but this time I booked in advance for diner in the main dining room.
1 Central Park…that does look good as an address on your business card. It is based in the Trump Towers, devided opinions left aside, it is a stunning restaurant. The word contemporary is invented here… :-).
Reception area is a bit coolish, but 100% ok. The get to the main dining area you have to go through Nougatine first. We have been given a lovely table for two near the window, actually the one you see on the picture in the far left corner. The Maitre is well knowledged about the menu and so is the somelier. Having browsed through the wine list in advance I knew exactly what to pick. The Domani Tempier La Migoua 2012 at 110 USD is a steal! Shop price is 59 Euro‘s. Small mistake by the waiter to let my guest taste instead of me. Nothing wrong, but since I ordered it it was a bit strange.
I ordered a Whiskey Sour, but always check if they make it with EggWhite, if you like that. In the US they are a bit affarid of raw eggs…. We where treated on a selection of amuse on the house, a good opener!
As a starter I ordered the Foie Gras Brûlée, Rhubarb, Pineapple “Raisins” and Sichuan Peppercorn. WAUW. If you like foie gras and you are in the mood for it then don‘t hesitate, it is amazing and I still taste the dish. My invite orders a JG classic, Yellowfin Tuna Ribbons, Avocado, Radish and Ginger Marinade.
For my second course I ordered the Mozzarella Ravioli, Black Truffle Fondue. So subtle and so balanced in flavour you wish there was more of them. The soft Mozzarella filling just blends perfect with the Truffle fondue. The ravioli‘s are shaped like a small candy with a wrapper. Delicious! My table compagnon ordered the Bouquet of Seasonal Vegetables, Lemon and Basil and looks just amazing!
For the mains my eye fell on the Licorice Braised Sweetbreads, Baby Carrot, Ginger and Shiitake Mushrooms. A good choice, but I have the feeling there are better dishes on the menu, the flavour was there, don‘t get me wrong, but I like my sweetbreads crispy baked on the outside and soft on the inside. When I had a look at the other dish on the table, the Black Bass Crusted with Nuts and Seeds, Sweet and Sour Jus, it just looked better.
As I just arrived from a 14h flight and my invite anticipated the dinner we still had space for dessert. And OMG was that worth it!! A cloud of smoke made from cotton candy wrapped around a compot of rhubard and wild strawberry‘s with an almond/franchipan base, a crumble, almond and strawberry sorbet mini quenelles and an ultra light whipped cream. Maybe one of the best desserts i‘ve ever had.
To conclude, Jean Georges may have lost 1 star, from 3 to 2, but who cares…for me he gets 5 stars! If you are looking for a fine dining experience without the hype and months waiting list then JG is the king!
