On the 6th. Floor of the newly opened beautifull Manadrin Oriental Hotel Jumeirah sits the first international venture of the Portuguese Chef Jose Avillez. He calls it Fun Dining instead of Fine Dining, and thats exactly what it is. A formula that works well in the Middle East. Sharing plates in a relaxed environment. Talking about the environment, there are no bad tables. Walking out of the elevators almost straight into the well appointed open kitchen you have stunning Down Town skylines on your right and an endless pool and seaview to the right. With the floor to ceiling sliding windows opened up it is a lovely place to settle down. We are a party of 5 and have been given the Chefs Table, what a great start! We look straight into the bar area where the mixologists craft excelent drinks!

The menu consists of 4 main chapters, the small plates, the starters, the mains, the exclusives. Prices look very reasonable (to Dubai standards) if you steer away from the exclusive section. So here it goes….the starters, Tuna tartare and Wagyu beef tartare, both come served in not so innovative, but super thin cone wafers with delicious toppings. The beef is the winner for me. We also order the Tempura Avocado which is good and the Golden Fried Eggs, served in a coper pot with a wooden spoon, gold leaf and black truffle goodness, left for you to mix it al up and serve over toast. I like! The prawns with garlic are simple but good.

On to the mains, for some reason there is this feeling that the cheaper dishes are the one to go for, more flavour and originality! We order the blue lobster and prawn rice, the pica pau (which translates to Wood Pecker) wagyu, the sirloin from the josper, the super tender Roasted octopus and lastly but not at all leastly the traditional Bacalhau. The winners for me are the Bacalhau, bold and rich in flavour and very well executed, and the Pica Pau. Everything served with 2 delicious, yet too small portions of handcut fries.

Our wine pick is an excellent, yet pricey Alentejo Riserva from the south of Portugal. Bold yet refined, it reminds me of a good Chianti Classico Riserva. 4 stars on Vivino is my rating.

The dishes are not to big in size so we are having a glimps at the dessert menu and look for temptations. There is a great option on the menu where you can pick 4 dessert at a prix fix. So we are easily fallen for this option. The Pastel de nata, The pavlova, The hazelnut and, being in the Mandarin Oriental, The Mandarin Orange. The hazelnut (served in a glass in the picture below) is the pick of the four. We receive a few deserts complimentary, paired with a beautiful Madeira digestif. We are A Fan of M.O.’s Classic but good Tasca.
