Must be said, when I came home after this spectacular evening I was in a euforic state of mind….the excellent food and….of course the vast amounts of excellent pairing wines had something to do with this. But OMG, this was our second visit and boy oh boy, knowing what was coming it waqs still as good as we remebered, maybe even better. I don’t want to “spoiler allert” you, so if you want to be surprised I will try not to give to much away. And otherwise, stop reading now. The location of the restaurant is in a great area in Cape Town called Woodstock, The Old Biscuit Mill. This is rapidly being redevelopped and rediscovered. It is becoming a destination on its own. Nice litlle shops selling antiques, food markets, restaurants,….check it out. It is also the location for The Pot Luck Club, the younger hipper sister of TTK. Making a reservation is a challenge, but the way TTK is doing it makes your chances of getting in a lot higher then in other top of the world restaurants. Basically they open reservations on the 1st of each month at 8:00 AM (local time) for the next coming month. So 1st March for reservations in April and so on…Put your allert in your agenda and wake up early as they do sell out for a whole month in less then an hour!
The dining experience is split into two sections. The dark room and the bright room. The dark room is where you sit in a relaxed bar atmosphere where you start with a choice of 4 excellently crafted house cocktails and a journey of 7 small appetizers. Each plate has 1 appetizer per person, so you don’t have to split and share awkwardly, I like! They are all delicious and surprising! I’m not going to go into too much detail here and let the pictures speak for itself. The excellent waiters explain the dishes much better then I possibly can anyway. (Pictures are not great due to the dimmed lights in the dark room).
After this amazing journey, your spice buds are in full party mode and you will be guided to the bright room, an experience on its own. The bright room is basically the kitchen, The kitchen is bigger then the restaurants seating area, proof of the dedication to give you an awesome foodie experience. Making use of some of the freshest locally sourced produce an paired by only South Africas best wines it becomes an exceptional evening. The wine pairing leaves you with two devastating options. Gourmand or Iconic. Gourmand being the funky new latest discoveries and the Iconic being the well established but rare exclusive vintages or limited releases of South Africas finest. The only thing left to do is to choose on of the two mains options. For the rest it will be a more classic approach in the sence of sequence, the dishes and flavours are an absolute delight! The Test Kitchen is Luke Dale Roberts playground, it is the flagship restaurant where he experiments and uses his creativity to the max to blow you away. Highly recommended !!!
